CYT North Idaho offers classes three times a year in a variety of theater arts, including drama, voice, dance, and specialty classes.

Each session includes the opportunity to audition for a fully staged musical production that is performed for the community.

CYT MUSICAL THEATER Class Benchmarks

Music Theater 1

Pre-requisite: 1 dance class, 1 drama class, 1 voice class
Let your creativity take flight through dance, drama and singing. Jump into the magical world of musical theater by exploring dance choreography, vocal technique and how to portray a character. Become a triple threat through warm-ups, group activities, theater games and performance. By the end of class, you’ll be ready to take center stage and shine as one of the show-stoppers in the showcase!

Benchmarks:
Execute a series of basic vocal warm-up techniques when being prompted and guided by the instructor. Examples may include diaphragmatic breathing, lip trills, and scales incorporating various vowels and consonants.
Actively participate in group acting games and exercises that incorporate the body and voice, some of which focus on connecting with a single partner and others that focus on engaging an entire group.
Perform basic dance steps often incorporated into musical theatre choreography. Examples may include jazz squares, grapevine, step touches, step kicks, chine turns, step ball-changes, pivot turns, etc.
Engage their bodies and voices simultaneously through musical theatre numbers that call for them to act, sing, and dance.
Perform in a small group or ensemble musical theatre number from start to finish while beginning to show signs of confidence, focus, energy, and stage presence.

Musical Theater 2

Pre-requisite: 1 musical theater class, or 3 classes of dance, drama or voice
Take your singing, dancing and acting skills to the next level and be challenged while having a blast! Musical Theater II will explore a variety of popular styles in musical theater. Learn how to capture your audience when you sing a breathtaking ballad and how to keep your energy high while dancing in a big toe-tapping number. Everyone will get a chance to shine in high-energy small group numbers as well as show-stoppin’ ensemble numbers in our dynamic end-of-session showcase!

Benchmarks:
Execute a series of basic vocal warm-up techniques when prompted by the instructor. Examples may include diaphragmatic breathing, lip trills, and scales incorporating various vowels and consonants.
Effectively engage the voice and body while maintaining focus and commitment during acting games and exercises—whether engaging a single partner or a group.
Perform sequences of choreography with confidence and energy while striving for technical efficiency and fluidity.
Utilize the skills that they have learned in voice, dance, and acting training within the context of their musical theatre workshop pieces.
Perform in both small group and ensemble musical theatre numbers while showcasing a fair amount of technical efficiency, confidence, focus, energy, and stage presence.

Musical Theater 3 for teens (ages 12-18)

Pre-requisite: 2 musical theater classes
All right, triple threats time to step out of the spotlight and jump into boot-camp! This class will challenge and stretch you in more ways than you ever thought possible in the realm of musical theatre. Get your solos and monologues in shape for auditions, your small group harmonies and dance technique ready for call backs, and your technique and approach ready for your dream role. This class is for serious performers only.

Benchmarks:
Execute a thorough repertoire of vocal warm-up techniques when prompted.
Effectively engage their scene partners with emotional honesty and technical efficiency.
Successfully tap into their personal life when playing a character in order to find the relevant emotional equivalents for people, places, and things that must have significant meaning attached to them.
This applies to solos, duets, and scenes. Execute all choreography within a musical theatre number with confidence and energy while maintaining technical efficiency and fluidity.
Perform solos, duets, small group scenes, and ensemble musical theatre numbers while showcasing strong technical efficiency, confidence, focus, energy, stage presence, and emotional honesty.
Complete a mock audition and call back process utilizing proper audition etiquette and technique while showcasing individuality and confidence. Perform a complete or extended musical theater showcase.
